Activision isn't hiding from GTA 6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 lands almost a month before Rockstar's giant, and Infinity Ward is back in charge with a darker campaign, a returning fan-favourite mode and a platform list that includes a Nintendo console for the first time in years. Here's everything confirmed about MW4.
Modern Warfare 4 Release Date
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026. That's on the early side for a yearly Call of Duty, and it gives players nearly four weeks with the game before GTA 6 arrives on November 19.
Platforms: Current-Gen Only, Plus Switch 2
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | October 23, 2026 |
| Xbox Series X|S | October 23, 2026 |
| PC | October 23, 2026 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Confirmed (check your local store for its exact date) |
| PS4 / Xbox One | Not supported |
Two big changes stand out. First, Modern Warfare 4 is the first mainline Call of Duty since 2013 to drop PS4 and Xbox One completely – Infinity Ward says building only for modern hardware lets it push bigger, denser and more stable experiences. Second, this is Call of Duty's return to Nintendo hardware; the last time the series appeared on a Nintendo console was Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U.
Heads-up for last-gen players: Activision has confirmed that Warzone will stop working on PS4 and Xbox One once Modern Warfare 4's Season 1 begins.
Campaign: War on the Korean Peninsula
The story centres on a full-scale North Korean invasion of South Korea, and the conflict quickly spills out into a global crisis. One of the playable characters is Private Park, a young South Korean soldier, while Captain Price returns on a separate, off-the-books mission. Beyond Korea, the campaign is reported to visit cities including New York, Paris and Mumbai – good news for Indian players who want to see a familiar skyline in a Call of Duty mission.
Early footage points to a grounded, grittier tone, closer to the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot than to the more bombastic entries in the series.
Multiplayer: Maps, Gunplay and Kill Block
- 12 core maps at launch, set in visually distinct locations around the world.
- Kill Block – a new dynamic map that reshapes itself between rounds, with more than 500 possible layouts.
- Reworked gunplay – Infinity Ward has overhauled weapon handling and movement with a focus on authentic, precise shooting.
DMZ Is Back
The extraction mode that debuted with Modern Warfare II returns. You drop in solo or with a squad, complete objectives, fight AI and other players, and try to get out alive with your loot. Infinity Ward says each deployment plays out differently, which should give DMZ more staying power than its first run.
PC Features
PC players get special attention this year. Infinity Ward and Beenox are promising more control over performance and visuals, multiple upscaling and frame-generation options (including NVIDIA DLSS support), and a wider set of advanced graphics settings.
Editions and Game Pass Status
Modern Warfare 4 is available in two versions: a Standard Edition and a Vault Edition with extra content. One surprise: despite Microsoft owning Activision, MW4 is not launching on Xbox Game Pass on day one. If you want to play at launch, you'll need to buy it.
Should You Buy MW4 With GTA 6 Around the Corner?
They're very different games. GTA 6 launches as a single-player story experience, while Call of Duty is all about multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ that you'll play for months. If you play with a regular squad, MW4 is the safer long-term bet; if you're mainly a story player, you might want to save your budget for Vice City. Many players will simply grab both.
